Lanzarote coast

Hot underfoot...
Over two centuries ago the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history took place, leaving a strange and alluring countryside in its wake – a landscape littered with volcanoes and dark streams of jagged lava. This is the backdrop to nearly every scene on the island and none more so than the 'Fire Mountains'. A true walking adventure.

Some of our days

Arrival day

A short transfer takes us from Arrecife airport to our hotel in Playa Blanca in time for a swim in the pool before a brief introduction to the island and dinner.

Teguise market and Haria.

Starting in Teguise on market day, we drive north to Haria to walk in the valley of a thousand palm trees. We take a beautiful ancient pilgrim's trail, to reach the Ermita de las Nieves, along the Risco de Famara, with spectacular views down to the sea and the surrounding islands.

The mountains of fire

An extraordinary walk amidst the reds, ochres and blacks of this lunar-like landscape demonstrates the power of the natural world. After a visit to a geothermic exhibition we walk to the very edge of the Caldera Blanca, stepping on the still-warm lava.

Papagayo, Femes and Yaiza

After a visit to the nature reserve of Playa de Papagayo, we head to the ancient village of Femes, where we start a fine circular walk, with marvellous views around the peak of Atalaya de Femes and a stop in Yaiza.

Free day

A chance to relax around the pool or take an optional tour, with a particular focus on the creations of Cesar Manrique, including his cactus garden, the famous Mirador del Rio which he transformed from a military settlement and an incredible lava cave system.

La Geria

The vineyards of La Geria are uniquely cultivated behind protecting walls and Alberto, the local wine-master will introduce us to the subtleties of the wines. Our walk then starts from Teguise, the ancient island capital, and takes us to the hills of the Ermita de las Nieves, with stunning views of the small islands of La Graciosa and Alegranca.

El Golfo, Los Hervideros and the Salinas de Janubio

From the spectacular volcanic crater of El Golfo, with its green lagoon, we move on to discover the amazing rock formations of Los Hervideros where we follow the walkways laid out by the artist, Cesar Manrique, through the maze of lava. Turning inland, we reach the Salinas de Janubio where the traditional method of extracting sea-salt continues. From here we return to our hotel via a beautiful coastal walk and the Montana Rocha, another ancient volcano.

We depart for Arrecife airport after an early breakfast.
