A typical week

Arrival day

Leaving Funchal airport we drive to the Pousada dos Vinhaticos, set in a luxuriant valley just in form the south coast. There will be time for a short explore before dinner.

Along the Levadas

Following a fast-flowing levada (irrigation channel) from Ribeiro Frio we walk through the dappled light of laurel trees with spectacular views. Later the scenery changes to sunny pastures, eucalyptus, cypress and mimosa forest.

Walk on the Levadas: Picos da Pedras - Queimadas-Caldeirao Verde

Think of an emerald green paradise. Today we walk to one of the most remote part of the island. Spectacular views of the villages and peaks and the majestic waterfall of Caldeirao Verde.

Two trails today

We start off along the Ponta de Sao Lourenço, the eastern point of the island, with wonderful views of the Islas Desertas. Later, making use of our minibus to gain height, we climb Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on the island with breath-taking views.

Free day

This is a chance to relax and swim, or travel further afield top discover Funchal or perhaps the famous tropical gardens of Monte Palace.

The last levada and a good hot bath

We start with a panoramic drive to the North East point of the Island. We then follow the spectacular Levada da Ribeira da Janela with its waterfalls and long tunnels back to Porto Moniz, a natural Spa. Here we can finish with a warm bath in the volcanic pools.

Water water everywhere – and loads to drink

The valley of Rabacal is one of nature's finest creations. Descending from the plateau of Paul da Serra, we arrive at the Rabacal Pousada from where we walk to the waterfall at Risco. Later, we reach a small lake at the bottom of a cliff, which towers above us and from the cliff face, 25 natural springs cascade down.

Departure day

Guests will be transferred to the airport during the morning to suit their personal travel plans.
