Malta • Gozo
Headlands of wild flowers A typical weekArrival dayLeaving Malta airport, we travel to the port, and a short ferry crossing to Gozo. After a brief transfer to the hotel on the seafront, we gather before dinner and perhaps have a dip in the sea. Xlendi and the Southern cliffsWe climb to the highest cliffs of Gozo following the majestic southern coast – part of the EU's Natura 2000 network of protected areas. We visit the small fjordlike sunken valley of Mġarr ix-Xini before continuing along the coast to Mġarr. Dwejra and the Wild WestThe unique geomorphological wild west coast of Gozo is best seen from the high cliffs of Wardija – a place chosen millenia ago by the Punic people for locating a sanctuary of their own. We continue to the Azure Window and the Inland Sea (with optional beer or boat trip) and then follow an old path, finishing at the solitary legend-rich chapel of San Dimitri. Zebbug, Marsalforn and the CitadelWandering down to the sea through the small hilltop village of Zebbug we arrive at the beautiful mini fjord of Wied l-Ghasri. Later we pass the unusual landscape of salt pans before taking the bus to Victoria with its fortified Citadel.
Eastern GozoFrom Calypso's Cave to Mġarr harbour, we follow rural and coastal paths to the north-east corner of the island. On the way we visit the sandy beach of Ramla l-Hamra and get a glimpse of Comino. Romantic CominoA short ferry ride takes us to this romantic island. A bird sanctuary, we'll discover coastal cliffs and caves, a peaceful sandy beach, a medieval chapel and 17th century Knights' fortifications.
Note: This is a selection of the many options available. Weather conditions,
group interests and the tutor will influence the final itinerary.
