Around the green island
The island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples is known as the ‘green island’, with mountains rising above 2000 feet. Famous for its almost subtropical climate and thermal spas it was popular with the Greeks and Romans. This walking holiday in Ischia treats us to medieval castles, cave dwellings, vineyards, olive groves, forests and beaches

A typical itinerary on this walking holiday in Ischia

Arrival day

Arriving in Naples you will be met and transferred to the port, where a fifty minute ferry crossing takes you to Ischia.

Roman baths and Elephant Cave

A lovely coastal walk full of ancient history –the Roman baths at Olmitello, and the caves of Cavascura, where we swim in the thermal water. From here, we take a boat to the extraordinary rock formations of the Elephant Cave and finish in the pretty port of St. Angelo.

Forests and wild herbs

A delightful walk through Pelara, an area of forests, Mediterranean scrub and wild herbs, finishing in a bay of crystal clear, turquoise water where we can swim or simply relax.

Free day

Enjoy a gentle day in Forio or take the ferry to the nearby island of Procida or Naples

Piano Liguori to St. Pancrazio

From Piano Liguori we walk to the headland of St. Pancrazio with spectacular views and hidden corners. Later we stop and visit the famed Castello Aragonese.

Vineyards and viniculture

A walk through vineyards, lunching and wine tasting at the winery. After a delicious meal, we walk via ancient gateways, stone houses and secret gardens to the Funno orchard, where we pick the fruit for use later at an informal cooking session at our hotel.

The Bay of Chiaia di San Francesco

From our hotel our walk leads to the Bay of Chiaia di San Francesco with its pretty waterfront. Via the old pilgrimage destination of the forest of Zaro, we climb Monte Epomeo, the island’s highest mountain, enjoying spectacular views across the Bay of Naples, ending in Lacco Ameno where we enjoy a well-earned drink on a terrace overlooking the sea.

Departure day

We depart early for Naples airport.
