Santorini in the Cyclades, is the picture postcard of the Greek islands. Its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and jigsaw of rooftops rise steeply from a sparkling blue sea. Created from a volcanic eruption, it stands in a lagoon, the caldera that is the crater of the sunken volcano. Its sunsets have become more legendary than the myth that Santorini may indeed be the ancient civilisation of Atlantis, supposed to have sunk beneath the sea.

Walking to the highest point of the island affords panoramic views of an island surrounded by clear ultramarine sea. The lanes pass through villages, with picturesque churches and monastery. Coastal routes lead to the fishing villages where fishermen tend their boats.
