Rugged walking in an ancient landscape
A week of contrasts, from gentle lakeside settings to the high peaks of the Pirin mountains. Our descents lead us through mountain villages with historic painted churches.

A typical itinerary on this walking holiday in Bulgaria

Arrival day

We reach our mountain hotel in time for a walk around the village before dinner

Goats and the Primrose Trail

Following a wild goat trail, we walk high in the Rila National Park. Returning via woodland and the Primrose Trail, we end up in the village of Dobarsko, with its 12th century frescoed church –a UNESCO heritage site.

Peaks and passes

Starting at 1900m, we follow mountain tracks between rugged peaks, up the Bunderitsa valley to Todorka pass. We descend via the ancient forests and lakes of the Damyanitsa valley.

Along the pilgrims’ path

We visit the fabulously ornate Rila Monastery where we enjoy a traditional Bulgarian mehana. Later our walking is on the pilgrims’ path through glorious meadows

Bezbog Lake and peak

From the chairlift at Bezbog Lake (2240m), we climb its peak with stunning views to the valley floor –the lakes and peaks of the Pirin mountains are laid out before you. We follow the ridge to Polejan peak (2850m) before returning to the chairlift.

Cart tracks and cafes

A gentle valley walk with panoramic views. We follow the ridge to Godlevo, returning along cart tracks via the painted chapel to the village. We’ll take a welcome break in the picturesque village square.

High-point viewing

Starting from the Vihren Hut (2195m) we take the easier route up Mount Vihren (2914m), the highest peak in the Pirin range. From here you can see over the Pirin into Greece and Macedonia.

Departure day

We depart for Sofia airport after breakfast.
