Photography holidays in Taroudant
Photography holidays in Taroudant

Morocco is just 9 miles from the Europe, yet it is distinctly North African, standing as a gateway to a fascinating mix of Arab, Islamic, Berber, African and European influences. Over the centuries there has been an extraordinary mingling of cultural influences, evident in the exoticism, energy and creativity of the country and its art and architecture.

Over the Atlas Mountains in South-West Morocco is the town of Taroudant, known by locals as "The Grandmother of Marrakesh". After the bustle of Morocco's tourist traps and sea ports like Agadir and Marrakesh, Taroudant offers the 'authentic' experience of Morocco that many visitors would like to glimpse, but which eludes them on their tourist trail.

Taroudant has the markets, souks and medina, the craftsmen make their products and the bartering begins over a glass of apple or fresh mint leaf tea, as is Moroccan custom. The craft skills are handed down through generations and the warmly spiced speciality dishes are traditional recipes.

Our locally based tour guides Ali and Alison hold the key to glimpse Morocco's secrets, the customs of every day life. They make introductions in to meet the villagers; they take us to photograph the scenery at an oasis. Local craftspeople invite our small groups to step in through their doorway, to sip tea or even to share a home cooked meal with them. The images we capture have the essence of real life as it is lived in this North-African community.

We also dine out at exotic restaurants and we stay in an old governor's palace where the gardens, pools and fountains offer tranquillity within its walls.

I've learned more about photography in a single week than I could have done in 12 months at home. Paul was superb, the atmosphere informal, friendly and non-competitive - all this was capped by a stunning destination - southern Morocco was a memorable experience.
PHOTOGRAPHY HOLIDAY
MOROCCO - 2009

On our way back over the mountain pass we linger to take in the views and spend a relaxing overnight in a luxurious countryside retreat. In previous years we have pressed on to Marrakesh after lunch in La Bergerie, but our guests found the jostle of crowds, persistent stallholders and conjurer displays for the tourists was jarring after the deeper experience of Morocco they have just had in Taroudant, so this year for the first time we are abiding by popular request to stay in the heart of Morocco.
