Watercolour workshop
A chance to meet a painter in the 'lair' of their own home studio, and see first hand, up close and personal, how paintings happen and what can give them their appeal - their 'tingle factor'. And for you to do the same.

After a warm welcome and coffee the aim is to lay the foundations of a few important techniques.

If painting is a language its words are the marks you make whether with pencil or brush, and where the control of water is just as important as the control of paint.

Within this context we will explore some of the marks you can make that will bring drama, deftness and credibility to your work and importantly for you, the confidence and means to produce compelling effects.

Typical programme

10:00 - Day starts

Introduction to the aims of the day, a brief demonstration of a 'sky drama' and an invitation to hear of your own particular painting frustrations along with your aspirations for the day.

10:30 - 13:00 Sky dramas

Dramatic skies can set the mood for a painting - even be the main subject; and they are often the first to be painted. We will explore some of these different moods using soluble pencils and paint, adopting a rapid sketchy approach - so bring your sketch books.

13:00 - 13:30

Lunch.

13:30 - 17:00 Capturing the essence

Combining deft pencil sketches with brushes and paint can capture the essence of a place, especially if done with speed and flair - with panache let's say.

Lines of all sorts combined with equally varied kinds of washes can lead to some lively and colourfully attractive results. And if they are made in a sketch book they not only retain a memory of a place but are also the springboard and information for larger more careful work.

17:00 - 17:15

Brief review of the day.

17:15 - Day ends

Meet the tutor

An acclaimed tutor with over 30 years of experience making images whether on film and videotape or on paper and canvas. He always relishes the chance to encourage those who are new to painting and just starting out, and will tell and show you everything he knows, but will always listen.

Roger is the senior tutor for Authentic Adventures and together with John Brough, has designed the majority of our holidays and workshops.

Who is the workshop for?

The workshop is for all abilities and anyone who wants to learn new skills or improve on those you know yet still find difficult. It will encourage speedier work that has flair, adventure and even takes risks to broaden your painterly horizons. We aim to have fun tempered by achievements that can be sublime, more felt than easily described.
