Magnificent South Africa is the perfect destination for painters and walkers alike and spending eight days in this wild, unique and naturally beautiful country will allow us to soak it all in. Walk a trail of ancient rock art created by the San people, reach the top of the iconic Table Mountain, which sits some 1,089 metres above Cape Town, and stop to paint in truly stunning locations along the way.

We will visit the popular town of Langebaan, which boasts crystal clear waters and of course its breathtaking Lagoon. There will be opportunities to pause and capture what we admire with our eyes on paper or canvas in multiple places on this tour, and there will be no shortage of amazing sights to recreate with our paintbrushes. The landscapes we will encounter in South Africa range from coastal and mountainous, to wildlife-rich national parks.

There will be a stop at Boulders Beach where we can watch wild African penguins on the shore, and the current population is estimated to be between 2,000 and 3,000 birds. We will also take in some of the country's staggering history with a visit to Robben Island, which is home to the prison that incarcerated Nelson Mandela for 18 of his 27 years behind bars. With the weather warm yet mild, this is the ideal time of year to visit for the kind of exploration that we will be doing!

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival day

This afternoon we take an overnight flight to Cape town and will arrive tomorrow.

Day 2 - Arrival day

Upon arrival, we will drive to Langebaan and enjoy lunch en route. Later, there will be free time to settle in, explore the lagoon and, if you're lucky, see turtles nesting. There will also be an evening introduction, where we can bond as a group and find out more about the week ahead. This town's beach is truly beautiful, with its white, sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, a location that is perhaps its most popular attraction.

Day 3 - Natural beauty

Today we drive west to the nature reserve. The walkers will hike through the reserve, learning about flowers and local wildlife along the way, and painters will visit the old part of the national park for a workshop, where the views are simply out of this world. Later, we reconvene as one group and take a cruise around the west coast nature reserve, before returning to Langebaan for the rest of the evening.

Day 4 - Early human creativity

Our day begins with a drive to the town of Clanwilliam, abundant with natural beauty, where the walkers will visit the Bushman Rock Art Trail. The scenes depicted here reference the San civilisation's spiritual influences. Painters, meanwhile, will spend time at the lake where the colours and textures are sure to inspire. After a picnic lunch, we continue on with the trail and, if time allows, we will visit Eland's Bay Cave.

Day 5 - Table Mountain views

We make our way to Cape Town and after lunch, the walkers will take the nature trail to the top of the legendary Table Mountain, visiting the hidden waterfall. This iconic mountain was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2011. Painters will be able to exercise their creativity at the top of the mountain, which will be reached via cable car, and the ascent will be rewarded with 360 degree panoramic views.

Day 6 - National parks

This morning we take a drive to Cape Point for a stunning guided walk through the national park. Those interested in painting will take the tram to the lighthouse. In the afternoon, the group will reunite to visit Boulders Beach. Upon arrival at this beautiful beach, we will see the wild penguins and also pay a visit to the naval port of Simon's Town, which is reached by a coastal drive that passes the amazing Chapman's Peak.

Day 7- Robben Island

Visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and explore restricted areas with the special access we have secured for this tour. There will be an opportunity to paint the prison and its surroundings and there will also be a guided walking tour of the island for those who would prefer to experience the island on foot. Later, there will be free time to explore independently before we return to the airport to catch our flight back home.

Day 8 - Return home

Today we arrive into London's Heathrow airport, where we bid farewell to new friends and the incredible experience we just enjoyed.
