Slide show with 3 images
Experience the breathtaking natural beauty that can be found in Scotland's northernmost islands, which provides the inspiration for a week of unbridled creativity. Walk, paint and recharge among this incredible, historic landscape.
Day 1 - Arrival day
This afternoon we depart from our chosen points and travel to Aberdeen, where we board the Serco Northlink Ferry and have dinner while travelling to Lerwick.
Day 2 - Island views
After breakfast we begin our tour of beautiful Shetland. Visit the spectacular cliff of Eshaness, where we pause to sketch their dramatic forms, and then enjoy a pub lunch before exploring part of the small islands, West Burra. We trace the fenced walkway down to the stunning Meal Sands and later return to Lerwick.
Day 3 - Island hopping
Today we start with a visit to the prehistoric and Norse settlement of Jarlshof, which boasts over three acres of remains that span 3,000 years. We pass a number of well built cairns and then reach Sumburgh Head, where we have more painting opportunities. Later, we have the opportunity to visit Shetland Museum and then we continue to the ferry where we sail from Lerwick to Kirkwall.
Day 4 - Scenic vistas
A mainland excursion to Orkney, visiting its impressive archaeological sites, takes up our time today. An 8.5km walk on easy to moderate ground takes us from Brodgar to Maeshow, and later to Skara Brae and along the cliffs at Marwick Head, with ample painting opportunities along the way.
Day 5 - Architecture and history
Walk around the historic heart of Kirkwall this morning. Following free time to explore the impressive St. Magnus Cathedral, we head to the Peedie Sea and its busy harbour. After lunch, we depart for Orkney's south end, stopping at the Italian chapel along the way. In the evening, we take the ferry back to Aberdeen.
Day 6 - Departure day
We disembark in Aberdeen and continue to our pick-up points to travel home.
