A typical itinerary on this painting holiday in Ischia
Arriving in Naples you will be met and transferred to the port, where a fifty minute ferry crossing takes you to Ischia. Take your time to settle into your hotel in Forio town, unpack and meander along the high street ~ get a feel for this pretty place.
Just outside our hotel is the pretty little town of Forio with its busy streets, café scenes and harbour. A lovely first day.
Vineyards and ancient herbs
Our Tour Manager, Marianna, will take us to a local vineyard for a day of painting in glorious surroundings. We will admire and paint the views and discover the ancient herbs that grow there. Susanna will teach you about perspective with the help of the vines. We may even try a little wine!
Torre di Michaelangelo & Castello Aragonese
We will spend a wonderful day on the east coast of the island at the Torre di Michaelangelo ~ the great painter was purported to have stayed here. It is a beautiful, turreted house with 14th century foundations, and a significant work of the Renaissance. There is a lovely café here, with spectacular views of Castello Aragonese. Susanna will inspire a day of painting, sketching, art and architectural history.
Relax in and around the hotel in Forio, take a boat trip to nearby Capri, the island of Procida or venture back to Naples. Ischia is famous for the thermal waters and guests can choose to spend the day at the Poseidon Spa – Susanna can recommend this peaceful place, with intimate gardens, olive groves, hot springs and geezers.
Sant’ Angelo – beaches and boats
On the southern tip of the island is the pretty beach destination of Sant’Angelo. Bars, boutiques and sandy beaches attract visitors, and we will have fun depicting the higgledy-piggledy houses dotted on the slopes, facing the sea. It’s an ideal place to capture the small isthmus that connects the mainland to a rocky outcrop.
Wine and gardens
A morning in a tiny winery full of history and lovely intimate little scenes. Here we’ll enjoy a lunch followed by a trip to the Mortella Gardens created by Susanna and Sir William Walton. Susanna will host a workshop and demonstrate here, focusing on plant studies. There is musical heritage on this pretty island.
We depart early for Naples airport.
