Greece • Cyclades Islands • Santorini
A heaven made from hell A typical weekArrival dayA fifteen minute transfer gets us to our hotel. Depending on your chosen flight time, there may then be time for an afternoon swim, one of Santorini's stunning sunsets or a moonlight drink under the lemon trees of the hotel. Megalochori magicThis is the prettiest of villages from whose central garden square, ringed by cafés, radiate all manner of alleyways. A chance to observe the comings and goings of this tranquil place. To the lighthouseIn our odyssey to see as much of the island as we can we strike out to this its westward extremity overlooking the open sea. On the way home we pause at the cliffs that ring the entire caldera to enjoy this spectacular view.
PyrgosIn Pirgos the paths climb up towards churches and small squares revealing images of the village and glimpses of the island beyond. We end the day enjoying the panorama from the Monastery of Profitis Ilias, the highest point on the island. Free dayA chance to relax at the hotel, explore Thira further, visit Oia or enjoy one of the many boat trips. Ammoudi bayA day in a pretty cove surrounded by boats and the marine paraphernalia of fishermen, while the azure sea laps at your feet. We end the day high above in white-walled Oia with its shops and cafés from which we enjoy the vista as sunset approaches. On the wild sideOur chance to explore the lower, wilder country that slopes down to the east side of the island and find swashing waves and shade at a small harbour and a friendly welcome in a seaside taverna. Departure dayThe airport is so close that transfers can be arranged to suit individual flights.
