A typical itinerary on this painting holiday in Istria, Croatia
Leaving Pula, we arrive in Vrsar in time to explore the old town and enjoy a drink looking out across the islands and harbour.
On the waterfront
We split the day between the old town around the hotel and the colourful harbour below.
Picturesque Piran and hilltop heaven
Just across the border into Slovenia lies the fabulous waterfront town of Piran. After spending the morning here we head for the medieval and artistic hilltop villages of Grožnjan and Oprtalj – full of subjects including tiny squares, church towers, narrow streets, doors and windows.
A scenic journey takes us to hilltop Hum, claimed to be the smallest town in the world. Here we will spend the day combining views of Hum with more intimate subjects from within the town. On the way home we stop to taste local products.
Explore Vrsar, wander down to the harbour, or take the early ferry to Venice for the day.
We spend the morning sketching the Roman history of Pula – the majestic Amphitheatre and the cafe scenes outside the Temple of Augustus. The afternoon is spent in the pretty waterfront fishing village of Fazana with colourful buildings, cafe scenes and views out to the Brijuni islands.
We spend the day amidst the colourful houses of Rovinj, a visual and historic waterfront treat.
We depart early for Pula airport.

Where we stay
Hotel Vista sits in the old hill part of Vrsar and looks out over several small islets and the marina below. Lovingly restored from a collection of six old stone houses by a young couple, the hotel creates a beautiful ambience on several levels. The rooms are all attractively restored, there are several different exterior relaxing areas with the option of shade and the staff could not be more helpful. There is no lift but we have booked the rooms with least stairs – usually around 7 to bedrooms and an additional 15 steps to the breakfast area. All but two rooms have sea views.
