Spain • Andalucia • Subbética Natural Park
Subbética The Subbética, with its emblem of the noble peregrine falcon, offers an ancient landscape of grandeur and rugged beauty. The scenery is spectacular, with white limestone cliffs and distant mountain views, yet there is an intimacy among the ancient ruins, fields and villages of the farming communities. Set high on a crag, amidst olive and almond groves, is the village of Zuheros – a tapestry of gleaming white walls and earth red roof tiles where Carlos provides a warm welcome at his family's hotel. Narcissi, irises, peonies and orchids are among the many flowers in spring, while autumn brings mushrooms, figs, almonds and quince. Throughout the year, griffon vultures patrol the sky.
Where we stay
Hotel Zuhayra
We've been going to the lovely Hotel Zuhayra near the square of this beautiful village since we started. Antonio and his team are exceptional and serve excellent local Andalucian fare. The rooms are simple, clean and comfortable and there is a small patio.
