Mallorca & Miro
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, colonized by the Phoenicians, later occupied by the Romans and conquered by the Moors in 902. This ushered in a new era of prosperity as the Moors introduced improved agriculture, irrigation and local industries. The capital, Palma, expanded and was known as Medina Mayurga.
The Pilar & Joan Miro Foundation in Palma houses an extensive collection of the artists work. Miro had close ties with the island throughout his life, and married his wife in Palma in 1929. The islands artistic heritage extends to the north of the island, to Pollenca, our base for painting holidays. The town has attracted painters since the beginning of the century thanks to the varied landscapes and subjects on offer. The town itself is a network of narrow streets – a legacy of the medieval era – with the Placa Major dominating the centre, outdoor cafes and a large 13th century church, Esglesia de Nostra Senyora dels Angels. You can either climb, or simply admire, the 365 step stairway that leads to a chapel on top of the hill known as Calvary.
Where we stay on this painting holiday in Mallorca, Spain
The three start Hotel Juma is ‘a home from home’ located on the main square of Pollenca, right at the heart of things – there is plenty of people watching here! It has a very welcoming atmosphere, comfortable interiors and modern facilities. Built in 1907, it has played host to many distinguished guests including Tito Cittadini, Dionis Bennassar and Roch Minue. The café is popular with locals and has a terrace that opens out onto the main square. It’s a small hotel with only six bedrooms, all with satellite TV, air conditioning, a safe, hairdryer and free WIFI. There is a sun terrace and hot tub on the roof with views of the bustling town square.
The sister hotel of Hotel Juma, L’Hostal is situated just off the main square of Pollenca.
