Lanzarote - a land shaped by volcanic forces The ancient volcanic island of Lanzarote, easternmost of the Canaries, was reshaped nearly three centuries ago by the largest eruption in recent history, and the landscape it has left behind is truly extraordinary. 32 new volcanoes were created, covering a quarter of the island with lava, and today you can still see the solidified lava streams. Successively home to the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Portuguese and the Ottoman Empire, Lanzarote has a fascinating cultural history to go with its unique geology. The island is also home to a spectacular variety of plant life.
