La Gomera – varied landscapes & a hippy feel
Another authentic destination: La Gomera, a tiny island only fourteen miles in diameter in the Canary Islands. An ideal place to unwind, explore, take gentle or more challenging walks and enjoy the sunshine and landscape. A volcanic island, it is almost completely circular with the Garajney National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site slap bang in the middle. The locals have a strange 'whistled language' which is indigenous to the island, developed in order to communicate across the deep ravines; called 'Silbo Gomero' it can be heard two miles away. It threatened extinction, so the government now require children to learn the technique at school!
Christopher Columbus made La Gomera his last port of call before crossing the Atlantic in 1492 with his three ships. We will be arriving by ship – or rather small ferry! – from Tenerife, and our sunny island holiday will begin. Enjoy the distinctive local wines and tapa – roast pork and roast goat!
We stay at the village end of the bay where there are cafes, easy access to the beach and beautiful sunsets almost every night.
