The Alpujarras Natural Park
Las Alpujarras, a region of fifty or so, mountain villages that cling to the southern edge of the Sierra Nevada, provide a magnificent landscape, where the backdrop is invariably the snow-covered mountains - Europe’s Himalayas. It is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful and unspoilt mountain regions in Spain.
These great mountains are contoured by acequias, Moorish irrigation channels clinging to the mountains and nurturing the green aprons of the villages with their raspberries, kiwi fruit and pomegranates. This was the last corner of Moorish Spain and the rich Berber legacy is pervasive. Each unique hamlet has retained its Berber architecture – tall round chimney pots and flat topped roofs where red peppers and tomatoes are laid out to dry. Scattered among this picturesque scene, and clinging to precipices, are the pretty villages of Capieira, Bubion and Busquistar.
Within easy reach of Malaga airport, and only one and a half hours from Granada, the village of Mecina Fondales is a good base to explore the authentic Alpujarras.
Where we stay on this Acapella Singing Holiday in the Alpujarras
Albergue de Mecina Fondales
With much Moorish influence, this extremely attractive and comfortable hotel lies at the heart of the Taha. The twenty one rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, are extremely spacious and house a fridge, colour television, telephone and lovely views of the countryside. There is an airy dining room, bar and lovely pool. Victor’s hospitality is remembered by all and we are fortunate to have such an old friendship, having taken groups here twenty years ago.
