The saxon villages and pastures of Transylvania
During the 12th and 13th centuries peoples of Saxony were invited by the Hungarians to live in Transylvania and to aid the defence against Turks and others. Not only did they build enormously ordered villages but they also constructed fortified churches in which to withstand a siege. Today these villages remain a reminder of that period but many now struggle to survive. Each house has its vegetable plot and beyond that lie the orchards and fields of the village, usually cropped with maize. Higher up lie meadows and pastures while beyond those are ancient oak and beech forests.
We start in the south of the region near Brasov and finish in the medieval town of Sighisoara where we stay within the stunning walled citadel.
Anyone particularly interested in these regions should read – Along the Enchanted Way by William Blacker. It is a beautiful read by a man who lived and explored Transylvania for eight years.
