Land of ice, fire - and stunning natural beauty You can't get much further off the tourist trail than Iceland, a land on the threshold of the Arctic Circle and rich in astonishing scenery and wildlife. Iceland is one of the least populated, and least spoiled, countries in the world and it offers many surprises, from its glaciers, volcanic craters and active lava flows to spectacular waterfalls and rare birdlife. You might have a little trouble getting your tongue around places like Fjallabaksleid and Svinafellsjokul, but you will have no problem at all appreciating their fascination. It all adds up to a fascinating holiday in a still-changing land that is different from anywhere else on Earth. You can take a ride among the icebergs on a glacial lagoon, stay at the foot of a glacier, watch nesting skuas and puffins and explore lava fields and beaches of black sand. Though it's so far north, Iceland, like the UK, is warmed by the Atlantic - particularly the southern lands where our holiday is based - and summer temperatures resemble those of an English autumn. |
