Greece • Cyclades Islands • Santorini
Santorini - a drowned volcano Santorini is essentially the remains of an enormous extinct volcano, and its landscape is as fascinating as you'd expect, with rocky precipices plunging down to beaches in a variety of shades of white, red and black. What was once a blazing caldera is now a blue, sheltered lagoon nearly 400 metres deep, where fishing boats bob peacefully at anchor. The surrounding rim of the crater gives some of the most spectacular views in the Mediterranean - and you can explore a wealth of culture, myth and legend in the island villages.
