Istria, Croatia – Roman history, villages and waterfront settings

Across the water from Venice lies the Istrian peninsular with its rich history stretching back almost 2,000 years and influenced in particular by the Roman, Venetian and Austro-Hungarian empires. Many towns date from Roman times and in Pula you find a fabulous Roman amphitheatre. The waterfront towns maintain the elegance of the Austro Hungarian times while inland amidst the hills there are pretty hilltop villages, churches full of frescoes, truffles and fresh local produce that makes one want to cook. Finally, there are the islands of the Brijuni National Park – a gorgeous archipelago and home to ex-president Tito. We have chosen to base ourselves in the old part of the fishing village of Vrsar. Draped around the hill looking out over a collection of small islets and a marina, Vrsar is set half way up the Istrian peninsular and gives us easy access for our adventures to the whole of western and central Istria.

Where we stay
Hotel Vista

Hotel Vista sits in the old hill part of Vrsar and looks out over several small islets and the marina below. Lovingly restored from a collection of six old stone houses by a young couple, the hotel creates a beautiful ambience on several levels. The rooms are all attractively restored, there are several different exterior relaxing areas with the option of shade and the staff could not be more helpful. There is no lift but we have booked the rooms with least stairs – usually around 7 to bedrooms and an additional 15 steps to the breakfast area. All but two rooms have sea views.
