Razlog – beauty in the mountains
A very loyal client recommended we look at Bulgaria as a destination for our walking and singing holidays. It appealed to us because it is a lesser known country in Eastern Europe with a lot to offer in terms of stunning mountainous landscape, affordable accommodation and a history and culture of folk music, ancient churches, and three National Parks.
Most of the country's cultural and historical treasures are centred around its capital, Sofia, but travelling to the Pirin mountains offers a chance to experience a slower, more authentic pace of life and a taste of traditional dwellings and food. The Balkan mountains run laterally through the middle of the country – there are two main ranges, Pirin and Rila, which, in the Winter months afford wonderful skiing and an important source of revenue for the local economy. We will take advantage of the chair lifts at the end of the Summer to enjoy the carpets of wildflowers and elevated views of lakes below.
We might be lucky enough to see a jackal, lynx or Eastern Imperial eagle. Bulgarian folk music is by the far the most extensive traditional art in the country and an important legacy in modern Bulgaria. We will enjoy gentle walks in the mountains, and stop to harmonise as a group reflecting upon the local music. If we can find the opportunity to sing with a local choir, or listen to local folk music, we will!
